It was a mixed opening day in Monte Carlo, not least because of the changeable weather. Ferrari's Fernando Alonso led during the sunny morning session, whilst McLaren's Jenson Button was the quickest runner after lunch before the rain hit. The drivers and senior team personnel report back...
The rain came to Monaco sooner than expected on Friday afternoon, which rather spoiled second practice as the times became academic thereafter. The shower came after the first half hour, and just after Jenson Button had redefined the ante with a lap of 1m 15.746s on Pirelli's super-soft tyre, 0.392s ahead of Lotus's Romain Grosjean on the soft

Fernando Alonso's Ferrari renaissance continued in Monaco on Thursday morning in the first practice session which was terminated nine minutes prematurely and not resumed after Heikki Kovalainen's Caterham laid a trail of oil in the tunnel following an engine failure. Alonso lapped his F2012 in 1m 16.265s, 0.365s quicker than Romain Grosjean's Lotus on 1m 16.630, but the times were tight with Sergio Perez next up for Sauber on 1m 16.711s from McLaren's Lewis Hamilton on 1m 16.747s, Williams' Pastor Maldonado on 1m 16.760s and a revitalised Felipe Massa on 1m 16.843s for Ferrari.

text Ma Qing Hua to test for HRT at Silverstone

HRT have announced that Ma Qing Hua will be in action for them at July's young driver test at Silverstone. It will be the first taste of Formula One power for Qing Hua, who is a member of the team's driver development programme. This season there will be two young driver tests with one taking place in Silverstone in July, following the British round, and another one later in the year which will be held in the more traditional location of Abu Dhabi. HRT have opted for the UK-based test, which will last for three days from July 10.

Pirelli have announced the dry tyre compounds that will be used for the forthcoming races in Montreal, Valencia and Silverstone. For the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal, the teams will use the P Zero Yellow soft and P Zero Red super-soft tyres. Team principal and president of the board of directors Peter Sauber has transferred a third of the stake in the Sauber Group to CEO Monisha Kaltenborn. Sauber himself will retain the remaining two thirds. "When BMW pulled out of Formula One in 2009, Monisha Kaltenborn was instrumental in the team's survival and since then she has been doing outstanding work in her capacity as CEO,” he explained. "Transferring one third of the stake to her represents an important step for me in providing continuity.

GP3 racer Conor Daly will enjoy his first taste of Formula One power this week courtesy of Force India. Daly will carry out an aero test for the Silverstone-based team at the wheel of the VJM05 in the UK on Thursday at Cotswold Airport in Gloucestershire. The American, fresh from his win at GP3's opening round in Barcelona last weekend, visited the Force India factory on Tuesday for a seat fitting and to familiarize himself with the systems on the car. He also got the chance to meet the engineering crew he will work with at the test and acquaint himself with a Formula One steering wheel.
Following Sunday's dramatic fire in the Williams garage after the Spanish Grand Prix, the team have confirmed that a further two team members have now been released from hospital and have returned home after receiving treatment for smoke inhalation. One Williams staff member remains in hospital in Spain having suffered burns in the incident. He is stable and will return to the UK within the next 48 hours
